Discovery of a Hard X‐Ray Source, SAX J0635+0533, in the Error Box of the Gamma‐Ray Source 2EG 0635+0521

We have discovered an x-ray source, SAX J0635+0533, with a hard spectrum within the error box of the GeV gamma-ray source in Monoceros, 2EG J0635+0521. The unabsorbed x-ray flux is 1.2*10^-11 erg cm^-2 s^-1 in the 2-10 keV band. The x-ray spectrum is consistent with a simple powerlaw model with absorption. The photon index is 1.50 +/- 0.08 and we detect emission out to 40 keV. Optical observations identify a counterpart with a V-magnitude of 12.8. The counterpart has broad emission lines and the colors of an early B type star. If the identification of the x-ray/optical source with the gamma-ray source is correct, then the source would be a gamma-ray emitting x-ray binary.

In the last years the hard X-ray astronomy has made a significant step forward, thanks to the monitoring of the IBIS/ISGRI telescope on board the INTEGRAL satellite and of the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on board of the Swift observatory. This has provided a huge amount of novel information on many classes of sources. We have been exploiting the BAT survey data to study the variability and the spectral properties of the new high mass X-ray binary sources detected by INTEGRAL. In this letter we investigate the properties of IGR J015712-7259. We perform timing analysis on the 88-month BAT survey data and on the XRT pointed observations of this source. Critical phenomena in polymer mixtures: Monte Carlo simulation of a lattice model

A lattice model of a symmetrical binary (AB) polymer mixture is studied, modelling the polymer chains by self-avoiding walks withN A =N B =N steps on a simple cubic lattice. If a pair of nearest neighbour sites is taken by different monomersAB orBA, an energye ab is won; if the pair of sites is taken by anAA or aBB pair, an energye is won, while the energy is reduced to zero if at least one of the sites of the pair is vacant. To allow enough chain mobility, 20% of the lattice sites are vacancies. Binary evolution of PSR J1713+0747

PSR J1713+0747 is a binary millisecond radio pulsar with a long orbital period (Porb ∼ 68 d) and a very low neutron star mass (M NS = 1.3 ± 0.2 M⊙). We simulate the evolution of this binary system with an accurate numerical code, which keeps into account both the evolution of the primary and of the whole binary system. We show that strong ejection of matter from the system is fundamental to obtain a mass at the end of the evolution that is within 1 - σ from the observed one, but propeller effects are almost negligible in such a system, where the accretion rate is always near to the Eddington limit. Proof of a Conjecture on Contextuality in Cyclic Systems with Binary Variables

We present a proof for a conjecture previously formulated by Dzhafarov, Kujala, and Larsson (Foundations of Physics, in press, arXiv:1411.2244). The conjecture specifies a measure for the degree of contextuality and a criterion (necessary and sufficient condition) for contextuality in a broad class of quantum systems. This class includes Leggett-Garg, EPR/Bell, and Klyachko-Can-Binicioglu-Shumovsky type systems as special cases. In a system of this class certain physical properties $q_{1},...,q_{n}$ are measured in pairs $(q_{i},q_{j})$; every property enters in precisely two such pairs; and each measurement outcome is a binary random variable. Scaling behavior in the dynamics of a supercooled Lennard-Jones mixture

We present the results of a large scale molecular dynamics computer simulation of a binary, supercooled Lennard-Jones fluid. At low temperatures and intermediate times the time dependence of the intermediate scattering function is well described by a von Schweidler law. The von Schweidler exponent is independent of temperature and depends only weakly on the type of correlator. For long times the correlation functions show a Kohlrausch behavior with an exponent $\beta$ that is independent of temperature. This dynamical behavior is in accordance with the mode-coupling theory of supercooled liquids.
On the angular momentum transfer on to compact stars in binary systems

Results of three-dimensional numerical simulations of the gas transfer in close binary systems show that, in addition to the formation of a tidally induced spiral shock wave, it is also possible for accretion streams to be produced, having low specific angular momentum in a region close to the accreting star. These streams are mainly placed above the orbital disc but are also unevenly present in the equatorial plane. The relevance of such flows is related to formation of hot coronae or bulges in regions very close to the accretor centre. We present the results of a multiwavelength monitoring campaign targeting the gamma-ray source 2CG 135+1 in an attempt to confirm the association of this object with the radio/Be/X-ray binary system LSI +61o 303. The campaign included simultaneous radio, optical, infrared, and hard x-ray/gamma-ray observations carried out with a variety of instruments, covering (not continously) almost three binary cycles of LSI +61o 303 during the period April-July 1994. Three separate OSSE observations of the gamma-ray source were carried out, covering different phases of the radio lightcurve. The 35-d modulation of the X-ray emission of Her X-1 in the framework of the SOD model: results of a three-dimensional SPH simulation

Several models have been proposed to explain the 35-d X-ray periodicity observed in Her X-1. We present the results of six three-dimensional quasi-polytropic smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of the tilted, twisted accretion disc of Her X-1 carried out in the light of Roberts' slaved orienting disc model (SOD) with the intention of finding some limits to the inclination of the rotation axis of the secondary and to the value of the polytropic index γ. These results show that a γ value between 1.05 and 1.1 and an inclination angle φ of the order of 45° are the most suitable for enabling the SOD model to work in three-dimensional space. Context: Weak flares are supposed to be an important heating agent of the outer layers of stellar atmospheres. However, due to instrumental limitations, only large X-ray flares have been studied in detail until now. Aims: We used an XMM-Newton observation of the very active BY-Dra type binary star CC Eri in order to investigate the properties of two flares that are weaker than those typically studied in the literature. Methods: We performed time-resolved spectroscopy of the data taken with the EPIC-PN CCD camera. A multi-temperature model was used to fit the spectra.
